This week for Dementia Action Week (May 17-23) Rob Roberts, MP for Delyn, has joined the Alzheimer’s Society Cymru in supporting those who are living with dementia in Delyn by becoming a ‘Dementia Friend’.
It’s been a devastating year for people affected by dementia. Right now, in Delyn and across the UK, nearly a million families are struggling to take care of their loved ones with the dignity and support they deserve. Sadly, the coronavirus pandemic has meant that people living with dementia are even more socially isolated.
Rob has completed his Dementia Friend training with the Alzheimer’s Society so that he can better support members of Delyn who suffer from the condition. A Dementia Friend is someone that learns about dementia so that they can help their local community, as far too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition that they live with.
More than 35,000 people with dementia have died of Covid-19 – around one in four of all UK deaths – making those with the condition the worst hit by the pandemic. Furthermore, many people living with dementia have experienced a significant deterioration in their condition due, in large part, to interrupted health and social care.
There are around 48,100 people living with dementia in Wales, and by 2030 this figure is expected to increase to 64,200. Dementia is caused by several diseases that affect the brain, with symptoms often including memory loss, difficulty thinking, difficulty problem solving and language, it can be a very scary and life-changing condition to live with.
Rob said:
“I am pleased to have taken steps to better support my community through becoming a Dementia Friend. It is vital that the 48,100 people in Wales who live with dementia are represented and understood and I am glad that I can now better assist my constituents by completing this training.”
An Alzheimer’s Society spokesperson added:
“Dementia does not just impact on the person diagnosed. It claims more than one life as families battle for the right care for themselves and their loved ones.
"Our findings paint a bleak picture. Family carers are exhausted, with more than 40% putting in more than 100 caring hours per week. People with dementia and their loved ones have told us they simply aren’t getting the care and support they need. Sadly, too many family carers reach a point of crisis before receiving help.”
