Member of Parliament for Delyn, Rob Roberts, welcomes the new proposed policies set out in the Queen’s Speech on Tuesday (11th), which confirms the UK Government’s commitment to level up the whole of the United Kingdom by boosting jobs, growth and innovation in every region and nation.
To mark the official opening of Parliament for another Parliamentary session, Her Majesty The Queen set out the Government’s proposed policies and legislation in the Queen’s Speech on Tuesday.
While this year’s events were pared back due to the current Coronavirus restrictions, the usual traditions in the ceremony still went ahead, with Her Majesty The Queen giving the speech from the throne in the House of Lords.
This year’s Queen Speech introduced over 30 new Bills for the upcoming session which cover issues ranging from animal welfare to investment in the UK’s transport infrastructure.
Most importantly, while the Speech emphasised the Government’s commitment to the UK’s recovery from this pandemic and it’s lifesaving vaccine programme, the focus was on the UK Government’s plans for the future – to level up the whole of the UK as we build back better.
Consequently, key parts of the Speech focussed on investment in national infrastructure including improving high speed broadband and connectivity and upgrades to the national rail network in Wales and cross-border through HS2.
Levelling up was also seen in the emphasis on access to skills and training opportunities for all adults in the UK, through measures like the Lifetime Skills Guarantee.
Other innovative measures will deliver on the UK Government’s commitment to level up following the UK’s departure from the EU by introducing reforms around qualifications, procurement and overseas study as well as leading the way globally with high environmental and animal welfare standards.
Plans were also announced to ban conversion therapy, a campaign which Rob has been actively involved in, to increase internet safety for all and to increase confidence in the electoral process through the introduction of voter ID.
Commenting on the Queen’s Speech, Rob said:
“While the Welsh Government continues to overlook the needs of Delyn and North Wales, I am proud that the UK Government remains committed to levelling up the whole of the UK and are stepping up to provide for the people of North Wales.
“Several of the measures announced in the Queen’s Speech will have a transformative impact for Delyn, including improving access to skills and training opportunities.
“It is vital that as we recover from this pandemic that we do not settle and return to ‘normal’. Instead, this Conservative Government will look to unite the whole country and spread new opportunities in people’s lives, in business and in our communities.”
