As part of the celebrations to mark 150 years since the rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster, Rob Roberts MP, is encouraging his younger constituents to take part in the Speaker’s art competition, ‘My Democracy Design’.
The competition, ‘My Democracy Design’, sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Commons, invites all young budding artists to design their own democracy themed tile, inspired by the beautiful Central Lobby mosaic tiles completed in 1870.
Young people are encouraged to use their imagination to design their tile to reflect the theme, ‘My Democracy Design’. This could include focusing on the theme of elections, famous moments in the history of Parliament such as the suffragette movement or even include what democracy may look like in the future.
Designs will be showcased online using the hashtag #MyDemocracyDesign, and the winner will be presented with a certificate and Houses of Parliament goody bag from Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons. The winning design will also be framed and created into their own unique democracy themed tile. Two runners up will also have their designed framed and receive a signed certificate along with a goody bag from the Houses of Parliament shop.
Commenting on the competition, Rob said:
“Sir Lindsay has taken to his role brilliantly since his installation as Speaker in 2019. He has the respect of all sides of the House and has embodied the spirit of fairness, tradition and history that is appropriate for his position, as well as having a strong eye to the future and seeing the role of the House of Commons develop and adapt to a changing world.
I would encourage youngsters across the constituency to get involved in the competition before the closing date at the end of the month in a unique opportunity for their artwork to be turned into reality. It’s a great contest, and I look forward to seeing your entries as they come in!”
